Real vs. AI Headshots: Why Authenticity Matters | Misty Westebbe

Why a Real Headshot Still Matters in an AI World

Before someone meets you, they may have already seen your face.

On your website. Beside an email. On LinkedIn. In a speaker introduction or a company directory.

That photograph begins an introduction. It helps someone connect a name with a person and get a sense of who they’ll be meeting.

AI makes it possible to create a polished image of yourself without stepping into a studio. I understand the appeal of something quick and convenient. But when the purpose of a headshot is to introduce you, I believe there is something valuable about a photograph made with you, in a real moment.

Your expression. Your smile. The way you look when you’re engaged in a conversation.

Those details help people recognize you and feel familiar with you before you ever say hello.

Looking Like Yourself Is Part of Building Trust

Think about arriving for a meeting with someone you’ve only seen online. Their photograph has helped you picture who to look for and made the introduction a little easier.

A current headshot can do that for you.

AI-generated headshots can change details as they create an image, from the shape of your face to your skin texture or the way your smile looks. You may love the result, but it’s worth asking: Does this feel like me? Would someone recognize me when I walk into the room?

A professional headshot should give you a photograph you are proud to share and that feels familiar to the people who know you.

You deserve both.

Your Expression Makes a Difference

The part of a headshot I pay the most attention to is your expression.

We can choose a background, adjust the lighting, and talk through clothing. But the expression is what gives the photograph its personality.

There is a difference between the smile you offer because a camera is pointed at you and the one that appears when you’re enjoying a conversation. There are quieter expressions, too, that can feel warm, thoughtful, or assured.

During a session, we have time to find what feels right for you and the work you do.

Sometimes that happens while we’re talking. Sometimes it follows a laugh. Sometimes a small adjustment makes the whole photograph come together.

That is a part of photographing you that I love: paying attention and helping you see what others respond to when they meet you.

Authentic Can Still Be Polished

Wanting to look like yourself doesn’t mean giving up flattering lighting or a beautifully finished photograph.

We’ll choose clothing that works well for your professional needs. I’ll guide you through the session, use lighting thoughtfully, and help you find expressions you like.

The goal is for you to look at your headshot and think, “Yes, that’s me. I feel good about sharing that.”

Your photograph can be polished, professional, and personal all at once.

Your Headshot Should Fit the Work You Do

A headshot for a therapist may have a different feel from one for an attorney, a creative business owner, or a corporate leadership team.

Before we begin, I want to know where you’ll use your photographs and what you want people to feel when they see them.

Would you like to appear welcoming and approachable? Do you need a more formal portrait for your company website? Would a variety of expressions and outfits give you more useful choices?

Those conversations help us create photographs with a purpose. You come away with images chosen for the way you actually need to introduce yourself.

Let People Meet You

There is something reassuring about being able to use a photograph that feels like you.

When someone moves from your website to a video call, or from LinkedIn to an in-person meeting, your headshot has already helped make the connection.

They recognize your face. Now they get to know the person.
